Established in 1990 the Public Astronomical Observatory at the Junta House, Panaji is a premiere organization in the field of popular astronomy in Goa. The observatory is run by the enthusiastic amateurs who are part of the Association of Friends of Astronomy (Goa) (an NGO Reg No 51/Goa/82

Every year from 14th November to 31st May activities like daily Sky observations, documentary film screening, lectures, workshops, exhibitions, discussions and childrens programs are held at the observatory (for program details click www.afagoa.com) .

Visitors to Goa can discover a startlingly different aspect of the State away from its beach and party image at this astronomical observatory. Participation and entry to all programs is free of cost and interested tourist of all age groups may attend as below.


Daily Observation

At the Public Astronomical Observatory a group of exuberant youngsters are always on hand to take you on a journey of the universe through Sky observation, telescope viewing, Constellation hunting and spirited discussions.

When to visit: Every night between 7:00pm to 9:00pm from 14th November to 31st May

Where to Visit: Public Astronomical Observatory, Junta House, (1st lift) 7th floor, Panaji, Entry: No prior registration required, entry free.


Cosmic Evenings

Every Saturday is a busy day at the Public Astronomical Observatory. A special presentation, astronomy documentaries and talks are organized and all enthusiasts are welcomed. Program is followed by sky observation through telescopes.

When to visit: Every Saturday 7:00pm from 14th November to 28th February

Where to Visit: Public Astronomical Observatory, Junta House, (1st lift) 7th floor, Panaji, Entry: Gate crashers are welcome, entry is free but for group above 25 attending at a time prior intimation is appreciated.


Beach Astronomy

Pairing the beauty of the Goan beach line with the cosmic sky line, regular beach observation sessions with telescopes are conducted for tourists. Along with observation, spot quizzes and other activities also form part of the show.

When to visit:

5th November 2016 : Calangute and Colva

10th December 2016 : Bogmalo and Colva

7th Jan 2017 : Mirmar (Panaji),  Bogmalo (Vasco) and Baga

Star Party

Only twice a year in the darkest skies of winter this is your chance to click a selfie with the real “Stars”. Any interested person of any age group may join these “Star Parties” wherein the observatory organizes a night long serious observation program of galaxies, clusters, nebulae and planet at remote plateaus free from light pollution on the borders of Goa.

When to attend: 28th January 17 (whole night)

Where to visit:

star parties are conducted at

Sankhali, Surla plateau (60 km from Panjim) or

Tillari Ghat (80 km from Panjim).

Entry: To and fro transportation will be arranged and dinner and breakfast can be arranged on request. No gate crashing allowed, interested participants should contact the observatory at least 2 days in advance.
